HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

The Vigo County Highway Department is responsible for improving and preserving all Roads, Bridges, Culverts and Right of Ways in the County.  This includes over 800 miles of roads (except State Highways and roads in the corporate limits of a City or Town), 200 bridges and over 200 small structures.   This also includes Winter Operations of snow and ice removal as well as Signage and Right of Way Permitting.

Recently, the Highway and Engineering Departments have been combined, with the County Engineer serving as Highway Director.  Within the Highway Department there are now 2 other divisions, Engineering Services and a newly created GIS (Geographic Information System) Department.  The GIS Department will provide efficiencies for improvements and preservation activities.  GIS is also a great tool for planning and budgeting activities.

Safety is our top priority!  Not only for the traveling public but also for our employees.  You will see our crews on the roadways performing their duties and responsibilities and I ask that you please be courteous and cautious.  They are there to complete one of the operations listed above and will do so as professional and timely as possible.

On this page you will find useful information regarding ongoing, new and planned projects as well as news and other announcements regarding Highway Operations.  Check back from time to time to see how projects are going or what new projects are coming.

Sincerely,

Larry Robbins, P.E.

County Engineer/Highway Director
