County Commissioners

County governments were originally created as administrative divisions of the states. Each state government in the country has designed, through its constitution and statutes, the authorities and powers that counties may exercise.

The powers of County Government Officials, in the State of Indiana, are divided along the same lines as the Federal and State Governments with three main branches. The Judicial, Fiscal, and Administrative Branch.

Vigo County has three Commissioners who are the administrative arm of County Government. The terms of office for County Commissioners are four (4) years on a staggered basis. The prospective Commissioner must reside in a certain district but elected by a majority vote of the County. Commissioners represent all citizens of Vigo County. The County Commissioners are empowered to set county policy, adopt laws, implement them, and, except for the responsibilities of other elected officials, carry out day-to-day operations of the County.

Vigo County Coroner

The Vigo County Coroner is Dr. Janie Myers

Lab:     812-237-1616
Office:  812-462-3360

Duties of the County Coroner

1. IDENTIFICATION of the deceased;
2. Determination of the CAUSE of death; and
3. Determination of the MANNER of death.

IDENTIFICATION may be as easy as having a family member at the scene when you get there or as difficult as having only a few bones to work with and having to utilize one of the many experts available to your coroner.

CAUSE of death is the final factor or event that happened to the deceased. If this had not happened, the individual would still be alive. This may be a cascade of factors or events, one following the other and this will be reflected on the death certificate that your coroner files with the county health department

As an example:

A. asphyxia (inability to breathe), due to
B. chest compression, due to
C. settling of automobile, due to
D. failure of jacking apparatus.

This group of factors is referred to as the mechanism, which lead to the asphyxia, which is the cause of death.

MANNER of death is a descriptive grouping. It is, however, a firmly set, universally accepted acknowledgement of how people die. These possibilities are:

A. homicide;
B. suicide;
C. accident;
D. natural; and
E. undetermined.

Vigo County Recorder

Diana Smith
Diana Winsted-Smith
Property fraud in Indiana has become more prevalent in recent years. If you are concerned about the rise in property fraud, you may want to take advantage of a system that has long been available to the citizens of Vigo County.
The Vigo County Recorder’s office has partnered with Doxpop, LLC to provide document images and index information to the public via the Internet without using taxpayer funding. As a part of that partnership, Doxpop also provides a Property Watch service that will notify you if any document is recorded that references your name or any parcels you own.
Early notification and follow-up when an unexpected document is filed provides property owners with a powerful tool to ruin the plans of fraudsters. However, fraud is not the only reason to use the property watch service. The most frequent reason for notifications is that a legitimate document has been filed. Knowing quickly when any document is filed pertaining to you or your property can help you avoid unpleasant surprises.
This service costs nothing to use, and free support via phone or email is provided during regular business hours. Signing up typically takes less than 5 minutes, so there is no reason not to take advantage of this powerful tool.
Any person may sign up at Doxpop.com to set a watch on their property and name. Participants are notified via email any time a document is filed that references the watched property or name. If you have concerns about the document that you have been notified of, you may then follow up with the Recorder’s office.
Residents of Vigo County who do not have Internet or email access may register in person at the Recorder’s office. If you have any questions about this service, or require assistance with registration, you may contact your Vigo County Recorder’s office at 812-462-3301, or call Doxpop at 866-369-7671. We are happy to help!
